Cape Elizabeth, ME
DLANDstudio’s design transformed the outdoor space of this coastal property into a multifunctional event space for this Brooklyn based family of five and their frequent guests. Local Nurembega stone was used in large slabs for walls and steps in response to the ruggedness of the Maine coastal environment. The Angela Adams tiles on the pool splash zone surrounded reflect the Maine artists understanding of the look and feel of the light, air, and water in the area. Exuberant, low maintenance perennial and shrub borders line the pool and terraced area. Plantings were selected that would be in full bloom or have maximum interest when the family was there.
The house’s irregular geometry and awkward relationship to the landscape was mediated with a new deck, screened in porch, outdoor shower, and storage area. The upper desk space creates an expansive area for entertaining with unobstructed breathtaking views to the ocean. In addition to the more formal spaces around the house, a boardwalk was added through wetlands enhanced with flowering native plants. This addition protects the delicate ecosystem while also providing easier access to the ocean.
