Joe Michaels Mile is a greenway situated between the Cross Island Parkway and Little Neck Bay in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens. The path is currently well used by cyclists and joggers, but suffers from deteriorating site furnishings and asphalt, in addition to extensive erosion caused by Hurricane Sandy.
DLANDstudio’s design will create safer conditions along the greenway by working with the Department of Parks Storm Recovery Unit to restore the shoreline, and the New York State Department of Transportation to strengthen and screen the border between the parkway and the path. The new design will also include additional seating and plantings, while selectively reconfiguring existing vegetation to screen or expose views of the bay. By appealing to a wider range of user groups and improving the aesthetic and functional experience of the path, Joe Michaels Mile will more effectively encourage healthy lifestyles and serve its community.
